Students from across the Douglas Shire returned to school for the first day of 2021 on Wednesday.

Many excited little faces walked through the school gates with mixed feelings of both nerves and excitement.

Principal of Port Douglas State School, Ken Schaumberg was at the school gate to welcome students and said this year there was an especially large number of new students joining the school after a huge influx of new families moved to the area.

“This year we have had a bigger turnover of students than normal, because of the economic changes happening and due to the many interstate people wanting to move up here at the moment,” he said.

“The new families have been great, and are fitting in. There was such a big group of new enrolments we even had a special orientation for those parents,” he said.
