Douglas netballers tussle for grand final positions

It was a huge week of finals at the Douglas netball courts over two big nights with the junior grand finals and the senior semi and preliminary finals.

Juniors

The Juniors finished off their 2021 season on Tuesday night.

The Stingers and Storm faced off for the final time. Some effective scoring from the Storm’s Isabel Teasdale and Imogen Lyne got them out to an early lead which the team were able to hold. Despite best efforts and a late surge by the Stingers, the Storm held on to win the 2021 grand final 45 – 12.

Player of the match was awarded to Hayley Fisher.

The Seniors finals campaign began on Tuesday night with a slew of very close semi-finals as teams battled it out for a place in next week’s grand final.

Seniors Division One

In Division One, the top of the table Cougars and Crocs faced off in a fast-paced match.

For three quarters the game was on a knifes edge before a couple of injuries hit the Crocs while the Minor Premiers, Cougars, had a late surge, taking the win 50 – 38, advancing straight to next week’s grand final.

Player of the match went to Nikkaya Williams.

In the second Division One match, the Sharks took on the Drifters. The Sharks came out strong against the Drifters, and despite their best efforts, the Sharks held the lead till the end to win 38 – 18, knocking the Drifters out of the finals.

Player of the match was Kira Howard.

On Thursday night, the Crocs and Sharks returned to the Courts for the Preliminary final.

It was an intense match as teams fought for the second spot in the grand final. The score was neck and neck until the end when a few last minutes goals by the Crocs put them just ahead to steal the game, 33 – 28.

Player of the match was Amelia Walker.

The Crocs will now face off with the Cougars in the grand final on Tuesday 31 August.

Senior’s Division Two

In Division Two, the semi-finals on Tuesday night began with the Magpies versing Poison.

This was another neck and neck match, with only one point in it at three-quarter time, before the Magpies took off in the fourth to win by 10 points and advance to the grand final. Final score 41 – 31.

Player of the match was Lani Dickson.

In the second Division Two match, Rattle went up against the Panthers. Once again it was a tight battle for the full four quarters with Rattle just keeping their noses in front at full time to win 29 – 24, knocking Panthers out of the comp.

Player of the match was Jamie Burcombe.

On Thursday night Poison and Rattle returned for yet another close preliminary final. After a tough four quarters Poison took the win, 38 – 24.

Poison will take on the Magpies in the 2021 grand final on Tuesday 32 August.
