Water latest

Our local water security continues to take small steps forward, this time confirmation ultrafiltration units are being delivered from South Australia to assist with the short term improvements of our water supply in the Douglas Shire.

Douglas Shire Council said the new units will help the Whyanbeel Water Treatment Plant process high turbidity water from Falls Creek, particularly during extreme rainfall periods.

“The units are another step towards greater water security and resilience for the Shire,” new Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon said.

“Our community has faced several challenges following Cyclone Jasper and disruptions to the water network have added an extra level of stress for residents.

“The portable units will provide a back-up water treatment option and will provide our community with a more reliable water supply.

“Council would like to thank the Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing, Minister for Water for his support as the recovery process continues.

Mossman Mill 

Several Mossman Mill employees took the opportunity today to attend an information and assistance session at Port Douglas community Hall.

Today’s session gave attendees access to direct support services, information about alternative employment options, upskilling and training and counselling options for local families.

The session was hosted by the Department of State Development and Infrastructure.

Cape Tribulation Road Easter re-opening

It’s taken longer than expected but locals and tourists alike are thrilled the Daintree’s main road artery, Cape Tribulation Road will re-open to all traffic from tomorrow.

Council said the road will open from 6am-7.30pm daily for vehicles no longer than 12.5 metres, whether towing a trailer, campervan, or caravan.

Scomazzon Mayor

As Newsport first revealed two weeks' ago Lisa Scomazzon is the new Mayor of the Douglas Shire.

Cr Scomazzon received formal confirmation about her new title a short time ago from the Electoral Commission. 

“Our community is still recovering from Cyclone Jasper and the flooding event that followed in December," Cr Scomazzon said.

"I’m looking forward to working with the CEO and Council staff to continue this recovery process, ensuring our water network is more resilient and our roads are restored as soon as is possible.

“I consider it an honour and a privilege to lead the Shire and I am committed to representing the needs of the community to the best of my ability.”

The fourth Councillor position is yet to be formally confirmed between Michael Joseph Rees and Jeremy Blockey.
