Port Douglas 82-year-old local legend, Bruce Ferguson, has not only defied the limitations of age but has also left an indelible mark on the community through his extraordinary efforts.

A year ago, Mr Ferguson embarked on a seemingly ambitious mission, one that he recently accomplished with sheer determination: collecting 100,000 10-cent bottles and cans.

Despite facing challenges, like cyclone Jasper, his determination prevailed, resulting in a substantial $10,000 donation to the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre. The centre, grateful for the generous donation, plans to utilise the funds for a canvas providing shelter during Wednesday morning food distributions.

Mr Ferguson’s simple idea to collect recyclables sparked at a Christmas party at the Neighbourhood Centre. Witnessing the amount of bottles and cans being tossed away, he decided to make a change.

With unwavering commitment, he then dedicated 4 to 5 hours each day to conducting rounds around town, wheelie-bin diving at local resorts.

This strategic approach not only allowed him to reach his impressive goal but also led to the establishment of his ‘own’ bins at these resorts, proudly labelled to signify that the collected items were contributing to Mr Ferguson's cause.

His efforts not only made a difference in the community but also brought unexpected joy. Recently meeting one of his grandchildren for the first time, their shared commitment to collecting bottles and cans strengthened their bond.

Not a stranger to community involvement, Mr Ferguson is always ready to roll up his sleeves, especially at the Neighbourhood Centre. A real “good egg” within the community, his remarkable commitment, regardless of age, shows that even a small effort can make positive waves. Way to go, Bruce!
