In a saga of reckless driving and perilous antics, the streets of Port Douglas is starting to become the preferred place for young hoons to wreak havoc and endanger lives.

Following our previous report on extreme burnouts leaving Old Port Road scarred, a new chapter unfolds as two youths, barely 15, unleashed chaos on the roads, with one driving his father’s vehicle at high speed.

The drama unfolded on Nautilus Street at Craiglie, where witnesses, including myself, heard the thunderous roar of a dark grey vehicle, believed to be a Range Rover, hurtling down the street. Despite efforts by Newsport to locate the perpetrators, they remained elusive, but that was to be short lived.

Danger strikes close to home

Geoff Mclean, a local cyclist, narrowly escaped tragedy when the reckless duo drove past him on St Crispins Ave. "The driver tried to push me off the road, missing me by less than half a metre” he said.

“It was plain dangerous," recounted Mr McLean, highlighting the grave dangers posed by such irresponsible behaviour.

Hid in resort to clean dad's car

In a dramatic turn, the two young hoons drove into a resort car park to clean the vehicle, only to be apprehended by the long arm of the law, represented by Cairns police who had been hot on their trail.

Shockingly, the vehicle involved belongs to a police officer in Cairns, with one of the boys believed to be his son.

Cyclists left stranded

The aftermath of the other hoons escapade on Old Port Road continues to plague the community, with cyclists like Geoff McLean unable to use the road due to the hazards left behind after the extreme burnouts.

"There's very fine tyre wire all over the road, and if we ride down there, our tyres will puncture," lamented Mr. McLean, calling for urgent action from the Council to make sure the road is clear for safe passage.
