Anzac Day was commemorated by thousands of people during a host of events across Douglas Shire.

There were Dawn Services at both Mossman (see separate story) and Cow Bay, with Newsport reader Bob Perry saying there were “115 people, two dogs and one horse” at the latter.

“(It was) followed by a scrumptious gun-fire breakfast hosted at Floravilla (Ice Cream Factory),” he said.

“A big thanks to Betty Hinton and the cooks.”

Spectators lined the streets and craned out of upstairs windows to see the march along Macrossan Street in Port Douglas from 10am, but the numbers were hard to gauge due to persistent light rain which lasted into the speeches at the memorial.

Close to 1000 people would have gathered there after the march.

Following that event hundreds gathered at the Central Hotel for the traditional two-up game.

Then later in the day a ceremony was held before the Port Douglas Crocs AFL footy game, with hundreds more at that event before the main game at 4pm.
