A Tokyo-style magic experience is set to take centre stage at this year’s Carnivale in Port Douglas, with Maho Magic Bar filling the iconic Dixie Park spot from 14 May to 8 June.

Brought to Australia by immersive theatre company Broad Encounters, Maho Magic Bar combines close-up magic, Japanese bar culture, and interactive performance. 

The concept transforms an intimate pop-up venue into a Tokyo-style magic bar, with sleight-of-hand acts performed at each table by a rotating cast of master magicians.

Broad Encounters’ Creative Director Kirsten Siddle said the show was inspired by the energy and uniqueness of Japan’s nightlife. 

“I wanted to bring Japan’s crazy, cool, fun to Australia and give audiences an experience unlike anything they have had before,” she said. 

“Seeing close-up magic really does inspire awe. The skill, finesse and personalities of these master magicians is really mind-blowing.”

Magic & cocktails

The performers come directly from Japan’s underground bar and magic scene. 

Leading the show is Sawaka, a stage, film, and television actress who also serves as host, main performer, and ringmistress, channeling the persona of a Yakuza boss-lady with commanding presence.

The show will feature a range of performances including close-up magic, fire manipulation, playful illusions, and unique routines using scent, props, and even vegemite. 

Audiences can also expect Harajuku-style magic, creative LEGO tricks, and high-energy cocktail flair from an award-winning bartender.

The venue includes a fully-stocked Japanese bar, offering a menu of cocktails, mocktails, sake, whisky, shochu and umeshu available to purchase, and a ‘Special Menu’ for guests wanting to add a little mystery to their night.
