As the team at Paws and Claws prepares for this year’s much-loved Pooch Party as part of Port Douglas Carnivale, excitement is quietly building, with a slightly different bark than usual.

The event is shaping up to be a warm and welcoming reunion for past and present supporters of Paws and Claws.

This year there will be changes to the schedule and location of the Pooch Party. Instead of Jalunbu Park, this year’s event will begin with a community Best Dressed Dog walk, starting at Reynolds Park and following the beach to the Surf Life Savers Grounds.

From there, the Pooch Party continues with a relaxed, dog-friendly morning.

Guests can enjoy a barbecue from Malone’s BBQ, face painting for the kids, free vet samples from Port Douglas Vets, and a big-ticket raffle with prizes from local businesses like Back Country Bliss, Sailaway, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, Floral Edge, Port Paws Dog Training, The Book Lounge, and more.

“It’s going to be more of a ‘dog’s day out’ this time,” Paws and Claws manager Chris Barber said.

“We’re hoping to reach out to everyone who’s adopted a dog from us over the years, there have been over 150 adoptions, and invite them to come along for the day.

"It’s a chance to reconnect, share stories, and remember all those incredible dogs.”

This year’s gathering is all about connection, celebration, and of course, plenty of happy, wagging tails.

“It’s really about reminding people we’re still here, still active, and still making a difference,” he said.

“It’s more of a community event than anything else.

“Seeing everyone dress up their dogs is always fun, but for me, the best part is when adopted dogs come back. Watching them with their new families, healthy, happy, and loved, that’s what it’s all about.”

The Pooch Party is part of Port Douglas Carnivale from May 23-25 and is sponsored by Ray White.
