Douglas Shire Aged Persons Home Inc. reaches a milestone 60 years of changing lives
ENDURING COMMITMENT

For a milestone 60 years, Douglas Shire Aged Persons Home Inc (DASPH). has been a lifeline for seniors, providing affordable housing that allows them to live independently while staying close to family and friends.
What makes this organisation truly special is that it began as a grassroots community initiative in February 1965, when locals united to address the need for senior housing.
Through dedicated fundraising from local groups, the first four units were built in 1969 at a site named Alchera, which fittingly means “a place where old people live”.
The success of this project led to further expansion, with five more units added in 1973 and the final stage completed in 1990, giving even more seniors access to secure housing.
By the 1980s, the vision grew even bigger with the establishment of Port Haven, a village-style community designed to provide companionship, security, and a sense of belonging.
Fast forward to today, and the organisation now manages 48 seniors’ properties, offering affordable long-term rental housing for those over 55, capable of independent living, and eligible for public housing.
The committee remains deeply connected to its roots, with three descendants of the original founding members still helping to steer the ship.
They’re joined by three experienced nursing professionals, ensuring that every decision is made with seniors’ well-being in mind. With members ranging from their early 60s to 90s, the committee benefits from a wealth of experience and perspectives.
Navigating government regulations and compliance, DSAPH is fortunate to have a highly skilled Housing Manager with over 20 years of experience, a law degree, and expertise in advocacy and community services.
Her dedication, along with the commitment of the entire team, ensures that Douglas Shire Aged Persons Home Inc. continues to thrive, evolve, and serve the elderly community, just as it has for the past six decades.
