Mossman's gymnastics club has finally reopened after being flooded out by the rains that followed Cyclone Jasper in December 2023.
Following extensive repairs and refitting, where the Mossman & District Gymnastics Club underwent a long process of cleaning and rebuilding, the grand reopening was held last Saturday, February 8.
At the forefront of the rebuild is long-time coach and soon-to-be club manager Vanessa Carey, who will be moving into the role in coming weeks in place of manager of 10 years Hayley Bender.
Ms Carey has coached at the club for four years teaching a range of classes including "aerial silk", where you learn to dance, spin, climb and flip in the air on silk ribbons.
During the club's closure she began her own business, the Port Douglas Sea Circus, performing at events across the region.
“About $400,000 worth of equipment was lost in the flood," Ms Carey says.
"Work commenced around mid-last year with Chris Jenkins from NQ Build. They’ve done an amazing job.
“All the new equipment arrived around Christmas and we have spent the last few weeks just fitting everything in preparation for classes.”
With the reopening, the gymnastics club will be operating from Monday to Thursday, with classes of about 8-12 students.
Sign-up for the first term opened last Saturday.
“Classes are filling up quickly, We still have some spaces in the aerial silk and our more recreational classes.
"But the competitive ones are filling up quickly.”
While the first term will be mostly a warm-up for the students, Ms Carey says there are many more events and classes to come for both kids and adults.
Ms Carey would also like to acknowledge and thank the various helpers who made the refit possible:
- Chris Jenkins and his team from NQ Build.
- Matthew Critchley, Brett Wright and Tully from “Matty C Sole Services”.
- Mossman & District Gymnastics Club’s committee and coaches
- Hayley Bender
- Bev Gwyne
- Sonja Zettl
- All the other volunteers and parents.
