Snakes Alive... it's Chinese New Year!
Chinese New Year
There are few better places in Douglas Shire to kick off the Year of the Snake than Wildlife Habitat nature park.
The centre park is home to a huge variety of snakes, including Sterling the black-headed python.
Wildlife keeper Ella Davies says she hopes the new Lunar Year, which starts Wednesday, January 29, will help promote a better understanding of the reptiles she works with almost every day.
“Hopefully it brings a bit of love to them because they are definitely a misunderstood animal,” Ella says.
Fellow keeper Brad Agner knew he wanted to work with snakes from an early age while growing up in the US.
“It started when I was three years old watching Steve Irwin on TV,” he says.
“I became addicted to it.
“Australia was the goal and working with reptiles was the main goal.”
His mum also saw the writing on the wall as to where her son would end up.
“I’d step inside the house and she was immediately like ‘empty your pockets right now’,” he says.
“She did my laundry one day and pulled out a snake, a lizard and a frog.”
The Wildlife Habitat reptile show is on daily at 11.30am at the centre.
The Lunar New Year’s Year of the Wood Snake starts Wednesday, January 29.
