NEWSPORT NEWSFEED: Get snappy… it’s a Girls Only zone for Crocs junior fun
Thursday, November 6
Girls Represent! Junior Crocs ‘GIRLS ONLY’ Come & Try Afternoons are coming to the Port Douglas Junior Football Club this month.
The PDJFC is super keen to get more of our local girls into the great game of AFL with the hope that we can add an Under 15s Girls team along with an Under 17s Girls team in the Cairns AFL Comp in 2025.
The Crocs will be holding two ‘GIRLS ONLY’ Come & Try afternoons, on Tuesdays November 12 and 19 and encourage everyone to please share the information with as many girls as you can.
Along with Coach Darren (coach of the U17 Girls 2023/24) we will have the coach of the Crocs Senior Women’s team, Chris Barber and the Captain of the Crocs Senior Women’s team Caity Walsh out on the field having a kick with the girls, running some drills and most of all, having FUN!
All Girls aged 8 to 17yrs are welcome to come along - the more the merrier!! If you’ve played before and are planning on playing next year, then we’d love you to attend as well. It’s encouraging for the younger girls to see the older girls represented too.
However, no prior AFL experience is needed - just a good attitude and a smile on your dial!
Please wear exercise clothes and runners or footy boots if you have them… no need to rush out and buy a pair if you don’t though, runners are ok.
We would love the support of our 2024 families in sharing this info and encourage all ‘the sisters’ to come along and give it a try.
Grants for three community groups
Douglas Shire Council has approved $18,000 under its Community Grants Program for three projects and announced the next round of grants will open in February.
Approved for grant funding have been the Port Douglas Community Service Network to a total of $10,000 to stage a Community Development Conference in November 2025; Mossman Horse Riding Club, $1000, to facilitate horse riding clinics at no cost and Maconi Wave Inc (Douglas FM 101.5) receives $7000 to increase participation of young people for onsite radio broadcasting.
In total, six expressions of interest were received, requesting a total of $54,300.00 from a funding pool of $60,000. Five of the six were assessed as eligible and the three successful applicants were the ones that applied.
“I love this type of grants program. It actually shows you how much of a diverse range of activities and clubs we have in Douglas,’’ Councillor Abigail Noli said.
“It just shows you what a little Shire can produce.”
