Palm Cove’s beloved Nu Nu Restaurant celebrated the 21st anniversary of its Melbourne Cup fundraiser with a “Fabulous Flamingos” theme, uniting the community in a fun and stylish event to raise funds for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

This year’s fundraiser focused on gathering resources to purchase a $4.3 million surgical robotic arm, a state-of-the-art device set to improve healthcare in the region by enhancing precision and recovery for complex surgeries.

The day’s highlight was the beachside Melbourne Cup race, with Danielle Jackman riding Multifacets - a retired champion who won the Cairns Cup in 2018. Now a pony club horse, Multifacets, under Ms Jackman’s guidance, claimed first place in a thrilling show of spirit and skill.

Ms Jackman, once a professional equestrian competitor, now dedicates her time to her upcoming venture as the CEO of Woofa App, launching in early 2025. Reflecting on the experience, she shared, “It was incredible to celebrate Multifacets’ journey with such a meaningful race and purpose.”

Led by co-owners Nick Holloway, Nu Nu’s Executive Chef, and Jason Rowbottom, who manages front-of-house, the event saw over 200 attendees revel in fine food and community spirit, with Mr. Rowbottom’s wife, Mo, keeping the crowd engaged and excited as the evening’s host.

“It’s always a joy to see our community come together for a cause that’s so close to our hearts,” Ms Rowbottom remarked.

A notable figure in Nu Nu’s community efforts, Amy Escott - married to Mr Holloway - played a memorable role in last year’s fundraiser, shaving her head after the team met a fundraising milestone. Her dedication was widely celebrated, adding to the event’s legacy of commitment to healthcare.

Ms Escott said “Our community’s willingness to give back year-after-year is what makes these fundraisers so impactful.”

Nu Nu’s Melbourne Cup is a powerful example of how a close-knit community can drive meaningful change. Each year, it brings Palm Cove residents together in support of essential healthcare advancements, drawing on local talent, generosity, and commitment to make a difference.

With the funds raised, the community moves closer to the goal of securing the robotic surgical arm, demonstrating the collective impact that passionate individuals can have on the health and wellbeing of their region.
