The 2024 Port Shorts Film Festival is set to light up Port Douglas this weekend, with tickets still available for Saturday's movie showcase in the park. With the stunning Coral Sea as a backdrop, the festival will once again feature a diverse lineup of local and international films on the big screen.

Last year’s featured filmmaker, Cairns-based videographer and photographer Raquel Lobera, described the experience of seeing her work on the big screen as unforgettable.

Her music video Pool of Flowers, created for the band Poetic Chaos, was showcased at the festival after the band’s lead singer urged her to submit it. Lobera encourages all film lovers and creators to take part in this unique event.

“Luckily, she did, because the idea didn’t occur to me,” Raquel recalled.

The emotional impact of being selected for the festival was greater than she anticipated. “I felt so much pride,” Raquel said. “It is extraordinary how being acknowledged can lift your spirits.”

Seeing her work projected on the big screen was a deeply moving experience for Raquel.

“It was like a dream come true and I cried a couple of times,” she admitted. “Being able to watch something I created on a big screen in such a beautiful place as Rex Smeal Park was an absolute blessing.

“I think it’s the dream of every creator - to have your work recognised and appreciated. It gives you a feeling of deep gratitude and pride.”

She was also impressed by the high quality of the other films and the vibrant atmosphere of the event.

“The quality and variety of the short movies that were selected were fantastic. The setup was spotless, and there was an amazing atmosphere,” she said.

“As a videographer, I truly appreciate and enjoy these events. We should appreciate the cinematographers and the talented artists in our communities in FNQ.”

Raquel’s passion for filmmaking runs deep, influenced by her family’s history in the field. “My dad and grandfather were cameramen,” she explained. “What I enjoy most about filmmaking is showing others how I see the world - those are my eyes, and that’s how I see life.”

To filmmakers considering entering next year’s Port Shorts, Raquel offers simple advice: “Give it a try. If you love filmmaking, seeing your work on the big screen is an incredible reward.”

She believes that imperfections are part of what makes a film special. Reflecting on shooting “Pool of Flowers”, which was shot in one take among the high grass fields of Machans Beach during the golden hour, Raquel said, “It wasn’t perfect, but that’s what makes it unique - like a birthmark.”
