Port Douglas is set to welcome a new social club for retirees and semi-retirees, offering them a welcome opportunity to connect with others in the community. Probus South Pacific, a not-for-profit organisation, runs clubs across the country hosting regular meetings, activities and even travel for older Australians.

Arranged by the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre in a bid to foster connections for seniors in the area, the Probus group will meet once a month with Probus South Pacific Community Engagement Officer, Ethan Haber, saying it’s a proven way for locals to expand their network.

“We often see members attend initially because they don’t know that many people in the area or they’ve lost those close to them so they’re looking for connection,” he explained. “They end up with 50 new friends that live in their area that they can see regularly and hold similar values”.

With humble beginnings in the UK in 1960, Probus has now grown to service over 23 countries with outstanding success in creating social circles for life. Seeing its potential and assessing a need in the Douglas Shire, the Neighbourhood Centre reached out to Probus. “The closest group is Cairns so we agreed that there was a gap that could be filled in Port Douglas,” Mr Haber said.

Each Probus Club is run by a chosen committee and features a guest speaker at every monthly meeting. The new club in Port Douglas will initially meet at the Neighbourhood Centre, with interim activities to occur outside of the monthly meet.

For those interested in joining, the initial meeting on October 28th will provide all the information needed to become a member and get involved in upcoming activities. Don’t miss this opportunity to become part of a thriving social group in the heart of Port Douglas.
