As the ongoing housing availability continues to impact the Douglas Shire, one local business is taking the matter into their own hands offering a helpful and affordable solution. Mossman Backpacker Resort is now offering reduced rates for workers in a bid to support the local community.

For just $200 a week, employees in the Douglas Shire can enjoy their own private room with all the comforts they need. Conveniently located on Front Street at the Exchange Hotel, the newly acquired Mossman Backpackers offers stable accommodation and modern amenities. Plus, with four daily shuttle services to Port Douglas, getting to work has never been easier.

The transportation to and from the Mossman-based accommodation house was a crucial aspect for owner Nathan Bonneau-Plassa, saying the service is a game-changer.

“We understand that the majority of our guests will be working in Port Douglas and that makes things hard for them if they don’t have a car, so we’re trying to make things as easy as possible to encourage backpackers to stay and work in the region,” he said. 

Seeing first hand the struggle many face when trying to find stable housing, Mr Bonneau-Plassa and partner Julien, have endeavoured to fill a gap in the market since taking ownership of the property earlier this year. Undergoing a total revamp, including name change, the Backpacker Resort has been transformed into a thriving community hub complete with a beer garden, pool and all the amenities you’d expect from a hostel. 

“The whole concept is based on community and supporting small businesses by helping them retain staff,” said Mr Bonneau-Plassa. “We’re trying to fill a gap in the market and keep the tourism in Mossman and Port Douglas alive.”

As businesses in the region continue to face workforce pressures, this unique combination of affordable accommodation and reliable transport could be a crucial factor in retaining staff.
