As Newsport first touted as far back as last November David Kempton has officially been confirmed as the preferred LNP candidate charged with the responsibility of dethroning Cynthia Lui at October’s State elections.

Mr Kempton previously held the Cook seat as the State Member from March 2012 until January 2015 and following this evening's preselection endorsement is determined as ever to overturn the currently held Labor seat. Mr Kempton overcame former Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr and long time Mareeba Councillor Kevin Davies for the right to battle Ms Lui later this year.

Mr Kempton’s biggest and most important challenge will be to gain the votes throughout the Cape and Torres Strait, where Ms Lui has long enjoyed a swathe of support.

There’s a saying in the Cook electorate, you win the Cape, you win the seat, so it will be fascinating to see how Mr Kempton convinces the voters in that area of the electorate to vote for him on October 26.

A source told Newsport if voted in later this year Mr Kempton's likely future immediate priorities for the Douglas Shire would be to reinvigorate the local tourist sector, and secondly, to find immediate solutions to secure the future of Mossman Mill.

Newsport understands Liberal leader David Crisafulli will officially unveil Mr Kempton as the LNP candidate for Cook at a public announcement in Cairns tomorrow morning.
