Tails will be wagging on Saturday the 20th of May as Port’s prestigious pooch party returns, giving pet owners the chance to spruce-up their beloved dogs and compete for exciting prizes.

Loyal sponsor Ray White Port Douglas will once again be present at the ‘pawty’, proud to continue their support of Paws and Claws Animal Shelter in their major fundraising effort for 2023.

According to Mark Flinn, Selling Principal of Ray White Port Douglas last year was a huge success.

“As big animal lovers we are so ecstatic to not only be a major sponsor of this Port Douglas Carnivale event but to offer ongoing support to save the lives of our fur friends whilst having fun in the sunshine,” he added.

Supporting vulnerable pets in the community

“Knowing that every dollar raised at this family friendly event is donated directly to the newly opened, purpose-built, animal refuge and boarding facility lifts our spirits. We can see first hand the increase in positive outcomes for vulnerable pets in our community from the Pooch Party.

“The volunteers and committee members never gave up on a 16 year journey to build the shelter and now it’s our turn to ensure it remains open for all the years to come.

“Doggy day care, boarding and adoption are the cornerstones of Paws and Claws services, Ashlee Robinson our Administration and Sales Support superstar went through the adoption process for beautiful Boots and then fell in love a second time, adopting puppy Remi, which makes it all the more special to continue to foster these heartfelt connections with this non for profit organisation.”

“The small volunteer base can only do so much, people power and fundraising are key for the doors of Paws and Claws to open.

“The entire Ray White Port Douglas family boosts support for the event by hosting the dog show and engaging new membership signups, selling tickets for the Mega Raffle, and cooking the monster sausage sizzle with all the produce and prizes generously donated by so many amazing local businesses.”

Fundraising fuels Paws and Claws

Michelle Blackman, Kennel Assistant at Paws and Claws and Fundraising Volunteer, added to this that fundraising is the heart and soul of Paws and Claws.

“Without events such as the Pooch Party and the generous support of our local businesses and residents, the shelter would not exist,” she explained.

“The Pooch Party is a fun way to give back to our community. It's great to see so many animal lovers coming together.

“Since the opening of the new shelter in August 2022, we have rehomed 33 animals. From in-take to adoption, it costs us approximately $500 per animal.

These costs cover medications, vaccinations, desexing, deworming, mites and other bacterial infections and general health care. Events like the Pooch Party, make all this possible!”
