Australian multiculturalism and the successful integration of migrants into our community was celebrated at Mossman State School this Friday in light of the national ‘Harmony Week’.

Staff and students dressed themselves in traditional clothes that reflect their culture. Some also wore orange as the official Harmony Day colour. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

The indoor sports centre came alive with traditional dances from all over the world, including Indigenous, Torres Strait Islander, Tongan, Thai and Scottish dances.

Deputy Principal, Mary-Anne Zahnow, said it was lots of fun with staff joining in the dances including Principal Mrs Murie.

Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

Since 1999, more than 80,000 Harmony Week events have been held in childcare centres, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.

Cross Country at Port Douglas State School

Students were running along Four Mile Beach this week as part of the school’s inter-house Cross Country Carnivale.

Principal Douglas Barnes said the course is arguably the best in Australia with the beach being the perfect terrain.

“Student Girra Girra took out the shield for the top house on the day,” he said.
