A ‘Dogs Life’ is a saying that describes a person with a miserable unhappy existence and that could also describe a K9 itself that’s been through the trauma of a misplaced home and losing their human family.

But now thanks to Paws and Claws brand new digs at Craiglie they are not only loved but will now be housed in the lap of luxury.

The search over

Around 50 people gathered at the new Paws and Claws shelter at Craiglie to celebrate the opening after five years of searching for a permanent home. At a cost of $1.8 million dollars the state-of-the-art facility is registered to hold 36 adult dogs in fully airconditioned comfort at a constant 23 degrees. Solar tube lighting, dimmable electric lights and even piped classical music are some of the other bonuses these animals get, whilst all powered by a massive 40 kw solar system. Paws and Claws President Michael Kerr was full of praise for the local community and the incredible support that the association has been given.

From architect Danny Vos, who was an integral part of the design and construction process to builder Darren Heatley who led the team on the tools, to a massive list of contributors that made this project happen. Michael Kerr said, “It’s been a very long road, but we are so glad it’s now open, and we can get back to rehoming these animals in our shire rather than sending them elsewhere” he said. With stage one now complete and the property operational, they’re now commencing work on stage 2 which will cost another $450k, so it’s not over yet. The main kitchen and puppy areas are some of the projects within stage two.

Entsch pivotal

Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch was central in gaining $500k for the association from the Federal Government for the facility, as were the board of the Cairns Animal Welfare Group who also contributed $250k for the project. Both Mr Entsch and a representative of the Cairns Animal Welfare Group were there for the opening. The State Government contributed $300k towards it as well, but unfortunately no one was available from the Government for the celebrations. The property which is already seeing full boarding capacity over the holiday periods is looking forward to being able to assist locals with their pet’s needs.

Adoption

While these animals might be living like millionaires they’d rather be adopted out to nice families.Take Peaches for example. She’s a 3-year-old Husky x Terrier Female. Although quite timid when she first came to Paws and Claws, she’s come out of her shell and described as a beautiful girl.Sharoo is a desexed 9 months old Cattle x Male. He gets along with everyone and is extremely gentle with children. Of course, there are others waiting in their luxury accommodation listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, so contact Paws and Claws if you can provide a good home.
