“1739 new cases of cancer”

That is the number of diagnoses throughout Far North Queensland every year and this Thursday is the Cancer Council’s major fundraiser Daffodil Day to brighten the path of cancer research.

The day aims to add hope to cancer sufferers, reflect on those who have beaten the disease and look to a cancer free future.

One Queenslander is diagnosed with cancer approximately every 20 minutes with an estimated 265,000 Queenslanders currently living with cancer and the number of new Australian cancer cases diagnosed over the period through to 2044 projected to total more than 4.5 million.

Cancer Council’s General Manager Fundraising Marketing and Communication, Meaghan Bush urged the community to show their support once again this year.

“2022 marks the 36th year of Daffodil Day in Australia, the Daffodil Day Appeal is Cancer Council Queensland’s most iconic and much-loved fundraising campaign,” Ms Bush said.

“Funds raised for the Daffodil Day Appeal go towards world-class, lifesaving research to help bring us closer to a cancer-free future.

“Daffodil Day is a day of hope where people across the country show their support for those affected by cancer.”

Daffodil Day and Cancer Council Queensland is urging the Cairns community to give all you can to support life-saving cancer research.

Cancer Council’s Queensland Community Development Specialist, Shalane Anderson is urging the community to show their support.

“The daffodil is the international symbol of hope for everyone impacted by cancer, which is why this year we’re calling on Queenslanders to give hope to those impacted by cancer by supporting Daffodil Day this Thursday,” Ms Anderson added.

“Every person who donates or buys daffodils will help us to invest in life-saving cancer research programs, giving hope for better treatments and early detection, and ultimately, giving hope for a cancer free future.

The major Daffodil Day Appeal stall is at Redlynch Central Shopping Centre but also stalls for FNQ at Cornetts Supa IGA and Woolworths Mossman.
