Local medical centre transforms into multidisciplinary practice
MOUNTAIN VIEW
MOUNTAIN View Medical Centre in Mossman has been serving the local community for over thirty years, but in recent months a lot has changed.
The modern accredited general practice surgery still upholds the traditional values on which it was founded, but has now transformed into a multidisciplinary team with a strong emphasis on allied and holistic healthcare.
Managing Director Louise Cooper said the new holistic health program means the practice focuses on the individual’s overall needs and mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing.
“We address not just the medical condition but the whole person,” Cooper said.
The team of doctors and allied health practitioners work together to provide specialised support for different patient needs.
Mountain View Medical now offers GP services along with psychologists, exercise physiologists, accredited dietitans, podiatrists and a diabetes educator.
The new additions to the centre come after change of ownership in January when Cooper, who comes from an allied health background, took over the running of the practice.
Cooper said she wanted to introduce the multidisciplinary holistic approach to bring everything under the one roof.
“The aim is to bring professionals to Mossman that weren’t offered here before,” she said.
The new services include an exercise physiology program which specialises in using exercise as medicine to assist with health conditions such as: high blood pressure, diabetes, long term pain, back pain and Parkinson’s disease.
The new dietitan service focuses on aiding people to overcome digestive related problems such as Irritable bowel syndrome, allergies, ceoliac disease, eating disorders and weight problems.
Cooper said anyone in the community can utilise this beneficial service to improve their health, not just their weight, placing the emphasis on nourishing the body to achieve optimum health.
“The dietician is weight neutral, taking the focus off weight gain and looking at the patient as a whole,” she said.
The medical centre also recently developed a diabetes clinic which combines the specialties of the diabetes educator, exercise physiologist and dietitan to create a tailor made program to meet the individuals needs. It is made up of one-on-one consultations, group exercise and email and phone support, so that those in the community with diabetes can learn the correct ways to manage their condition.
Mountain View also offers a 12-week intensive ‘Reclaim your Health Program’ which focuses on taking control of all aspects of your health: physical, emotional, spiritual and environmental. The team of allied health practitioners support the participants in a tailored approach depending on their needs to help people set themselves up for a lifetime of wellness.
The centre is now hoping to expand their preventative health services and are looking for another GP and allied health practitioner to join the Mountain View team.
