SPORTS DIGEST: Muddies top two qualify for home finals

The two top Port Douglas Muddies cricket teams have qualified for home finals after finishing top and second in their respective leagues.

The Muddies 2nd Grade team finished more than two wins clear of nearest rivals Rovers following an easy win on Sunday afternoon.

After dismissing Norths for 73 in 29 overs, the Muddies passed the total none down in 12.5 overs, with openers Ethan McCullough and Matt Foy making 48no and 23no respectively.

With the ball, Peter Gilmour took 3/17 from seven overs, while Adrian Bannerman took 3/13 from five overs.

The team will play fourth-placed Mulgrave Punjabi this Sunday from 12.30pm at Port Douglas oval for the right to play off in the Grand Final.

The 3rd Grade moved into second spot after Norths forfeited.

The team will play third-placed Bhutanese Rovers at home this Saturday from 1pm.

The 4th Grade side had a win on Sunday against Mareeba Bandits, posting 7/124 in its allotted 30 overs.

New recruit Shaun Hollis and number four batsman Jimmy “Junkyard” Mudaliar put on an 85-run partnership, with Hollis making 56 and Mudaliar 37.

Mareeba was dismissed for 82 within 25 overs, with opener Doug Barnes (5/7 from seven overs) and young gun Jai Schwarzer (4/26 from seven overs) doing most of the damage.

Thursday evening bowls and BBQ had 12 players taking part. Ladies played Thursday afternoon.

Tropical Far North District Ladies Pairs Championship will be played at the Mossman Bowls Club on Sunday, March 23
