Are we there yet? Maps error guides travellers way off course

Some travellers to Cape Tribulation may find themselves going in the wrong direction for hours after an error on a popular navigation app suggests taking a route that is both unsuitable in some places for 2WD vehicles, and is twice as long as the usual road.
Currently, if an Apple Maps user inputs directions from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation, they are given the inland route.
This path guides them the long way along the Mulligan Highway all the way to Wujal Wujal before bringing them through the Bloomfield track, which is not necessarily suitable for smaller vehicles.
Most other GPS services have corrected this error, but Apple Maps has shown this as the most suitable road to take for more than a year now.
This Mulligan Highway route takes over four hours, while the path across the Daintree Ferry is a considerably shorter option for travellers looking to explore Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest, which usually takes just under two hours in comparison.
This anomaly has confused many visitors to the region, who have vented their frustrations online.
Others have posted on Facebook in late 2024 a similar suggested route to Cape Tribulation via the CREB track just past the Daintree Village - a 4WD road not suitable for small vehicles and only open about half the year.
While the road to Cape Tribulation via the ferry included delays and closures after Tropical Cyclone Jasper in 2023, extensive roadworks in the past year have now reduced the delays.
