Paws and Claws is growing.

The much-loved Craiglie animal shelter is being extended back to the street behind, allowing the ability to house 10 more dogs.

And the search is also on for a new paid trainee to work at the centre and help care for the dogs and cats housed onsite for boarding and refuge.

Paws and Claws has won a $10,000 grant to take on the trainee, who will be required to do a Certificate III in Animal Care Services while working there.

Shelter manager Chris Barber says interested people have until the end of the month to apply.

“I’ve worked with animals for over 20 years so the biggest thing we are looking for is someone who is not afraid of getting dirty and willing to learn about caring for animals,” Mr Barber says.

“We have had 22 applicants but have only shortlisted three for interviews.”

Mr Barber said the traineeship is a great opportunity for paid work in an industry that is often voluntary.

“Once you are qualified you will step up every year,” he says.

“Animal welfare is something that will never go away.”

Paws and Claws currently employees three people.
