This week, Newsport proudly joins a national fundraising effort running from April 28 to May 4.

We invite you, our valued reader, to get involved and help keep local, independent news alive in your community.

This marks the second consecutive year Newsport is taking part in the campaign, led by the Local and Independent News Association, a not-for-profit supporting a network of grassroots newsrooms across Australia.

The week-long initiative brings together 52 independent news outlets nationwide, all working to secure vital support for trusted, community-driven journalism.

Thanks to generous philanthropic backing, the first $10,000 raised will be matched dollar for dollar, but only while funds last.

That means your support can go twice as far to keep Newsport free, accessible, and independent across the Douglas Shire.

LINA executive director Claire Stuchbery said Newsport had a strong community role and was particularly valued during times of need.

“Newsport has been instrumental in keeping people informed and connected during cyclones and floods, the team there work hard to make sure the community knows what’s going on, during emergencies and throughout the year,” Ms Stuchbery said.

“This is a news service produced by local people who care about the community they live in and share stories that bring us together and help us navigate living in the Douglas Shire.

“We loved bringing all the LINA member publishers to Port Douglas last year to celebrate their work at our annual Summit, it was so good to see Newsport’s connection to the community in action.”

Editor Shaun Hollis said this support is essential for Newsport to continue delivering the coverage our community relies on.

“Whether it’s local events, emergency updates, or community voices, Newsport connects our region in meaningful ways,” he said.

“Your contribution helps us grow our free print edition and strengthen our reporting team.”

As a thank you, everyone who donates will go into the draw to win one of two one-hour massage vouchers from The Deep Retreat, a small gesture to show our appreciation.

Matching is limited, so we encourage readers to give early and make their support go even further.
