Tiny koala arrival steals the spotlight at Wildlife Habitat
EASTER CUTENESS
BUSINESS FEATURE
A tiny new arrival is melting hearts at Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas, just in time for the school holidays. One of the park’s resident koalas, Lulu, has been spotted proudly carrying a male joey on her back, an exciting milestone for both visitors and keepers.
The joey has been out of the pouch for a few weeks now, making regular appearances on Lulu’s back and beginning to explore the world beyond.
Wildlife Habitat general manager Clare Hunt said the timing of the joey’s debut couldn’t be better.
“We’re thrilled to share this special moment with our visitors,” she said.
“Watching a joey develop and bond with its mum is one of the most beautiful parts of the koala life cycle - and it’s happening right now at Wildlife Habitat.”
Koala breeding program
Lulu’s new arrival is more than just an adorable sight, it marks an important step in a national koala breeding program supporting the long-term survival of this vulnerable species.
With wild populations threatened by habitat loss, disease, and climate change, Wildlife Habitat and other Zoo and Aquarium Association-accredited centres play a key role in boosting genetic diversity through in-situ conservation.
The joey was conceived naturally, and what makes him especially significant is his genetics; his father comes from a wild background and isn't suitable for release, so his contribution to the captive breeding program is particularly valuable.
CaPTA Group wildlife manager Rabecca Lynch said the program acts like a “modern-day Noah’s Ark, safeguarding species and their genetics against threats to their survival in the wild”.
“Koalas in educational facilities are important ambassadors for their wild cousins, giving visitors from around the world a chance to connect with them and understand the importance of conserving both the species and their habitat,” she added.
Getting a closer look
Families visiting during the school holidays can witness Lulu and her joey as part of a wide range of immersive experiences. From hand-feeding kangaroos and wallabies to spotting crocs from the Predator Plank, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.
For an even closer look, guests can book Breakfast with the Birds, which includes a visit to the koala enclosure, offering a rare opportunity to start the day with a tropical breakfast and spend time up close with these iconic Australian animals.
With daily wildlife presentations, shady boardwalks, and photo opportunities with koalas, Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas is the perfect spot for a family day out, and now, a chance to meet its newest and tiniest resident.
