Death of Sir Frank Moore
Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Mark Olsen has paid tribute to Sir Frank Moore, the father of tourism in Queensland, who passed away on Thursday, October 10, aged 94.
“Sir Frank’s influence in advancing tourism, particularly sustainable tourism in Australia, stretches back to 1978 when he headed the Queensland Government Inquiry that led to the establishment of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation which he chaired until 1990,” he said.
“Our organisation, which was then the Far North Queensland Promotion Bureau, was also shaped by the steadying influence of Sir Frank during his time as Chair.
“Sir Frank has been one of my personal heroes over my three decades in tourism and I know his wisdom has also helped to guide the careers of many of my colleagues.
“His legacy continued as Chair of the Australian Tourism Industry Association from 1984 to 1996, and he chaired the committee that brokered the development of the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism which he chaired from 1997 until 2007.
“Sir Frank also chaired the Australian Tourism Research Institute, the Federal Government’s Tourism Forecasting Council, Nature Resorts Limited, Advent Tourism Fund Management Ltd and Great Southern Railway.
“He was a founding director of Jupiters Limited, a Director of Gold Coast Airport Corporation and a member of the World Travel and Tourism Council.
“I extend my sincere condolences to Sir Frank’s family and pay tribute to one of the greats of the Queensland tourism industry.”
