As the State Election nears, campaigning in the seat of Barron River has candidates putting forth strong stances on local issues ranging from environmental protection to infrastructure development. Covering an electorate that spans scenic regions like Palm Cove, Trinity Beach, and Clifton Beach, voters will soon decide the future direction of these areas.

Craig Crawford, the Labor incumbent who has represented Barron River since 2015, is running for re-election, emphasising infrastructure development and environmental conservation. In a recent candidate forum, Mr. Crawford highlighted the significance of preserving the Great Barrier Reef and its connection to the region’s economic and environmental future.

“Our community is not just a tourist destination, but also a guardian of the reef. It’s crucial we protect it for future generations while maintaining a thriving local economy,” he explained.

Challenging Crawford is Ben Campbell from Katter’s Australian Party (KAP), a Navy veteran with deep ties to the Far North Queensland region. Mr. Campbell has focused his campaign on lowering living costs and protecting local freedoms, a stance shaped by his experiences during lockdowns.

“The policies from Brisbane don’t always work here. I’m committed to making sure our way of life is safeguarded,” he said, stressing the need for local decision-making and community safety.

As voters weigh up their options, the future of major infrastructure projects, such as the Palm Cove Gateway and the restoration of Double Island, is top of mind for many. These initiatives are seen as key to boosting tourism and easing traffic congestion in the rapidly growing area. Both candidates have expressed their support for these developments, but with differing strategies on how to fund and manage them.

The election promises to be a critical juncture for Barron River, with the community’s future hinged on decisions made at the polls.

As Julia Green, a resident of Clifton Beach, put it: “This election will determine the direction we take… whether it’s continuing to protect our environment or finding new ways to grow our community sustainably.”

With a mix of economic, environmental, and lifestyle concerns on the table, Barron River voters face important choices in shaping the next chapter for their region.
