A young man is recovering from a deadly death adder snake bite near Coen, Cape York, on Sunday night with family and friends expressing their gratitude for the expert emergency response efforts of Queensland Ambulance and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Snake bite victim Wylie Clarke, 17, is said to be “OK” after the scary ordeal and has been released from hospital late Monday afternoon after undergoing a series of blood tests to monitor venom levels.

He was bitten on the ankle when he trod on the snake which had entered an outdoor station dwelling kitchen.

Bradley Clarke said his son, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, likely suffered only a “dry bite” but the deadly snake had struck hard enough to draw blood.

“He wasn’t 100 per cent at the start… a bit off and in a bit of shock,’’ Mr Clarke said.

Wylie was bitten by the snake at a station north of Coen around 9.40pm on Sunday. The ambulance service from Coen met him on the road and transferred him to the Coen Medical Centre where the RFDS then transferred him to Cairns Hospital via Weipa for observations and tests.

“They were awesome,’’ Mr Clarke said of the ambulance service and RFDS.

“We absolutely rely on the RFDS up here in Weipa and the Cape… we don’t have the hospital facilities to handle many of the things that can happen.’’

Newsport hopes to speak further with Wylie for a story update.

Final polling numbers for Cook

The Electoral Commission of Queensland has announced all declarations for the 2024 State General election have been completed and the writ has been returned to the Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeanette Young.

Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said to have the election delivered and all declarations completed within 13 days of the October 26 election is an extraordinary effort by everyone involved.

“Almost 3.23 million people voted in this election, representing a voter turnout of 87.75 per cent, which is around the same as the 2020 State general election (87.92 per cent),” he said.

The enormity of delivering an event of this scale can be seen in the numbers of people, places and resources we engaged to make it happen, Mr Vidgen said.

In the seat of Cook, LNP's David Kempton was officially declared victor with 14,419 (54.98%) of the preferential vote, defeating Labor's Cynthia Lui with 11,808 (45.02%).

The official first preference vote, however, had Ms Lui just a nose in front of Mr Kempton, by 16 votes, 8744 to 8728.

KAP candidat Duane "Mossy" Amos picked up 5158 of the 26,227 votes cast in Cook, with Pauline Hanson's One Nation Queensland Division runner Peter Campion polling 1832 votes and Queensland Greens Troy Miller getting 1765 votes.
