In support of local families in need and with the help of local support organisations, Centacare FNQ initiative; School Savvy, recently held a ‘pop-up shop’ at the Mossman community hall. This event accepted donations of old school uniforms and school supplies to help those in our region who may be displaced or disadvantaged.

School Savvy, established in 2016 is an initiative which aims to fight against poverty by aiding families who may be struggling financially by helping supply school uniforms and equipment. Their work is significantly important in the back-to-school period where they heavily rely on community donations and assistance from support groups in the areas they run their program.

Javier Suarez spoke to Newsport on behalf of School Savvy highlighting the importance of their programs, and the impact their work has on regions like ours.

“We bring a recycling concept to communities and bring in the idea that we can all support each other. With community support we continue to grow each year helping more than 2000 families last year,”. Mr Suarez said.

School Savvy hosts these pop-up shops in efforts to establish a human connection and show families that support is available, something that is incredibly important following Cyclone Jasper in 2023.

“Many people often struggle to see the light when in these situations and may feel that no one cares. School Savvy shows that we can all help each other”.

With the help of various sponsors School Savvy has become a statewide initiative even providing support in some parts of New South Wales, all in the effort of helping as many families as possible

School Savvy travels throughout FNQ previously to Innisfail and now Mossman last weekend hosting similar pop-up shops. In the preparation of the 2025 school year School Savvy will once again be present in communities including Mossman ready to assist families in the back-to-school period.
