BUSINESS FEATURE

Get ready for a day of community fun at the Douglas Shire Volunteer Extravaganza this Saturday 16th November.

Held at Port Village Shopping Centre on Macrossan Street from 9am - 12pm, you can expect live entertainment, face painting, arts and crafts and even a petting zoo, all in a bid to not only celebrate the countless volunteers that contribute selflessly to the Douglas Shire but to also bring the community together in a fun and interactive way.

Whether you realise it or not, volunteers are the backbone of a small community and days like these offer a chance for residents to get to know the people behind the organisations. It’s also a chance for those interested volunteering themselves to network and find out more information about what’s involved.

Tanya Morris of the Douglas Shire Grass + Roots Volunteer Network said a good heart is the start of any volunteer. “You just need a caring personality and be willing to learn,” she said. “There’s so many different roles that there is something for everyone and it’s a fantastic way to give back to your community and learn some new skills”.

Representatives from the Ambulance Committee, Circle of Plenty, Kookaburra Kids, Tangaroa Blue, Douglas Shire Historical Society, Port Douglas CWA (and their delicious cakes) Meals on Wheels and the Leukaemia Foundation will all be present and ready to chat to anyone about jumping on board. Backed by Volunteering QLD, you can find more information on volunteering and available opportunities on their website.

From keeping our iconic beach beautiful with monthly beach clean ups to feeding the elderly community through Meals on Wheels, almost every facet of our daily life is touched by volunteerism.

Ms Morris said the day is also a great way to bring people together. “The town needs a good community space and a place to come together, and the Volunteer Extravaganza is the perfect opportunity.” She continued by saying, “It’s important in a small town to get to know one another and just hang out in a casual setting with people of all ages”.
