Running since 2005, the Cairns Ecofiesta draws thousands of attendees each year, combining education, entertainment, and sustainability. This year’s event featured Australia’s beloved science communicator, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, who emphasized the urgency of climate action.

“Events like Ecofiesta are crucial for inspiring the next generation of eco-champions,” said Dr Kruszelnicki, urging attendees to rethink their impact on the environment​

The festival also included live music, with local band Salt and Steel debuting a new single, and market stalls showcasing sustainable solutions like solar-powered gadgets and eco-friendly homewares.

Former Cairns Mayor Bob Manning previously praised the event, stating, “Ecofiesta is a testament to our community’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. It reinforces our vision for Cairns as a leading eco-city.”

In addition to Ecofiesta, the Reef Guardian program engages schools, businesses, and individuals in protecting the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a collaboration that resonates with both locals and visitors.

Marine biologist Emily Carter, who works closely with the program, explained its significance.

“The Reef Guardian initiative connects people to the reef in meaningful ways, ensuring its protection for generations to come,” she said​

Tourism operators are also stepping up. From carbon-offset tours to waste-free resorts, the industry is evolving to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly travel

Local operator Liam Torres noted, “Tourists today want more than a beautiful destination - they want to know they’re contributing to its preservation.”

As Cairns moves closer to its 2030 goal, the city’s eco-focused programs are creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the environment. They’re transforming Cairns into a destination where sustainability is not just a value but a way of life.
