A local reader has shared a poem about the issue the of depression in the wake of a story published on Newsport. Picture: Submitted

Just days ago Newsport journalist Paul Makin filed a story which lighted the plight of Douglas Shire resident Keith Dickinson and his recent battles with the 'black dog' of depression.

Following the story Newsport reader Rob Hubbard who lives in Port Douglas contacted us to share his poem 'black dog' which he put together in a collection of poems titled 'A spaceship called mother earth'.

The Black Dog

It snaps at our heels
In the dark of night
Flashing its fangs
And creating fright

Evil dark eyes
Staring within
The lips quiver
With that sinister grin

By it’s action
It makes an impression
Creating a feeling
We call depression
How can we rise
Above it’s clutch
Throwing away
That debilitating crutch

Leave the dog
On the chain
Positive thoughts
Positive gain
Evil dark eyes
Staring within
The lips quiver
With that sinister grin

You can tell yourself
You are okay
That’s a happy
Start to the day
