It is one thing to grow up and attend school in a paradise surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef and a World Heritage rainforest, yet, the allure deepens when the school itself ranks among the top five percent in academic achievement within the region.

Port Douglas State School has become a beacon of educational excellence in the Douglas Shire, drawing attention not only for its stunning surroundings but also for its commitment to providing a top-tier learning experience.

Open for enrolments across all year levels, from prep to year 6, local parents are encouraged to consider this institution for their children’s education.

Acting Principal Douglas Barnes expressed his enthusiasm for the school’s academic accomplishments, emphasising the joy of working in paradise.

“There’s only one thing better than living in paradise, and that’s working in paradise,” he said. “There is no more rewarding occupation than moulding the future of Australia, and that’s what the dedicated staff of Port Douglas State School do each and every day.”

Underscoring the school's foundation, Mr Barnes stated: “Our school is built on relationships because these are what will make our students feel welcome, valued, and successful”.

Unique learning opportunities

In 2023, the school embarked on a transformative journey, crafting all its units using version 9 of the Australian Curriculum.

This innovative approach intricately links the curriculum to the local area and the unique interests of the students.

“This has resulted in a rich educational experience where students can seamlessly connect their learning to the local context and immerse themselves in learning,” Mr Barnes explained.

Adding to the unique learning opportunities, the school places a strong emphasis on literacy development in the early years, from prep to year 2.

“We believe that a strong foundation in literacy enables students to become successful learners and citizens within their community,” Mr Barnes explained.

This diverse environment is further enriched by the tireless efforts of the school’s dedicated Parents and Citizens Association (P&C).

“Beyond fundraising, the P&C plays a crucial role in communicating school events to the community and supporting initiatives benefiting all students,” Mr Barnes explained.

Beyond the educational focus, the school has also dedicated attention to providing outstanding facilities.

“Our 240 students are spoiled for choice across our expansive 7 hectares, featuring three ovals, a tennis court, an indoor sports hall (Storm Surge Shelter), a computer lab, numerous undercover play areas, playgrounds, and fully air-conditioned classrooms,” Mr Barnes said.

“If you seek a school with safe and supportive classrooms, excellent academic results, and a commitment to moulding successful citizens, consider Port Douglas for 2024.”
