As our beloved seniors embrace life's golden chapter this week’s seniors wrap showcases stories of dreams coming true, blossoming friendships and cherished childhood memories.

EMBRACING DREAMS WITH PURPOSE

It is what many seniors dream of post-retirement; packing up everything and exploring the breathtaking landscapes of our beautiful country.

Barry and Marnee, a couple from Brisbane on the verge of retirement, have turned their dreams into reality by embarking on an extraordinary lap around our beautiful country.

What sets their journey apart is the meaningful touch they've added by dedicating their time to volunteer work, creating a positive impact wherever they go.

“We believe that travel should not just be about sightseeing but also about giving back to the places that welcome us,” Marnee said.

From helping at the Mossman Support Service to assisting at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre and Paws & Claws, they've made a meaningful impact while fulfilling their wanderlust.

SENSE OF BELONGING

Not ones to sit around, Barry and Marnee recognised the value of volunteering during their travels.
“There are so many fantastic elements of volunteering, but for us being nomads, it gives us the opportunity to gain purpose, meaning and belonging,” Barry added.

The best part, they noted, is that volunteering isn't about getting paid, as it reduces pressure and adds more fun to the experience.

“Volunteering lets us decide how much time and energy we want to give, and all efforts are appreciated,” Marnee said.

“Volunteering gives opportunities to work alongside others and slowly but surely, conquer the challenge to get out of our comfort zone.

“For anyone hesitant to try something new, just ask yourself, 'What have I got to lose?’.

BLOSSOMING FRIENDSHIP

In celebration of International Day of Friendship on July 30, John and Shorty, residents at Kubirri Aged Care Centre in Mossman, have formed a special bond over their shared love of gardening.

Their adjacent rooms offer a garden space outside their windows, where Shorty's passion for gardening has brought them together.

According to John, Shorty has “heaps of plants out there and he’s bought me a couple of plants because he goes to the market every Saturday”.

John appreciates the plants Shorty cares for and their regular conversations, recognising the essence of a great friendship.

REMINISCING CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

A visit from the Baha'i Youth Group brought cherished childhood memories flooding back for the residents at Kewarra Aged Care Centre

As part of the home's multicultural program, the residents joined in the fun, dancing, clapping, and singing along with the group.

The sound of children's laughter brought pure joy to Zelma, a resident at Kewarra, who described it as a beautiful feeling.

Together, the students and residents created unique gifts of hand-painted rocks with special messages, along with beautifully painted recycled tins and branches.

The musical instruments played by the group mesmerised the residents, leaving them in awe of the sounds.

Resident Patricia expressed that she had a wonderful day and said, “I want to be a kid again”.

It was a wonderful day filled with creativity, laughter, and a delightful sense of youthful spirit at Kewarra Aged Care Centre.
