A 20-year-old Bayview Heights man will face Cairns Magistrates Court in the coming weeks after allegedly driving a car directly towards a Police officer during a roadside breath testing encounter in South Cairns.

QPS said at around 3.50pm yesterday near Hardy Road, Mount Sheridan an officer directed a car into the site for testing but was forced to “take evasive action” when the car was allegedly “driven directly at the officer” before it continued along Hardy Road.

Soon after Police located and arrested the man at an address at Bayview Heights where he was later charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and unlicenced driving whilst disqualified.

He will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on February 15.

Meantime, Police have appealed for witnesses following the arrest of a 40-year-old Yarrabah man just days ago.

Police will allege the man wandered on to the Captain Cook Highway near Smithfield and stopped oncoming traffic, before verbally abusing motorists and banging on windows.

Two off-duty officers, with the assistance of a member of the public, arrested the man and moved him to safety to allow traffic to flow.

He was charged with one count each of public nuisance and pedestrian moving into path of driver.

He was bailed and will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on February 14.
