Port Douglas sea creature lovers have been left shattered, angered and down-right disturbed after a much-loved mature green turtle was discovered dead in what some believe were suspicious circumstances at the south end of Four Mile Beach on Saturday afternoon.

The regularly seen and adored turtle, thought to be aged around 90 years old was very well known to locals who swim at that end of Four Mile Beach.

The cause of death officially remains unknown however onlookers suggest, based on both a visual inspection and photos taken at the scene that show a clear, deep penetrating hole right through the animal’s back – that it may have been intentionally killed by a powerhead spear or something similar.

The death of the endangered species aged turtle has left her admirers devastated.

It’s understood the animal has been seen previously nesting in the vicinity in which she was found deceased.

A well-placed source has suggested the most likely theory is that the turtle was indeed speared, it’s attempted to escape, before its later returned to the beach and passed away – again this is a theory and has not been substantiated or verified as yet by Newsport.

Upon locating the turtle on Saturday a witness noted it was in “absolutely perfect condition” at the time of its death.

“The turtle’s death would have been immensely painful – this is an endangered species and a devastatingly sad story, a source told Newsport.

Newsport understands The Department of Environment and Science (DES) has been notified of the incident and has commenced an investigation into the matter.
