The yearly trip to Low Isles has become a rite of passage for Senior students across schools in the Douglas Shire. Picture: Miallo State School

Just days ago students from schools in the Douglas Cluster were blessed with the opportunity to head out to Low Isles to explore the wonders and beauties of the Great Barrier Reef.

With the wind blowing ten knots on the way out, the sun beaming through the water, the conditions for snorkelling seemed to be perfect.

Jake Pendlebury, HPE teacher at Mossman State School said that students from all schools in the Douglas Cluster were filled with laughter and joy as they headed out towards the reef.

“The trip provided an excellent opportunity for all the kids to socialise and form new friendships as they close one chapter of their schooling and begin another in High School,” Mr Pendelbury said.

“These moments were filled with Titanic re-enactments, jokes galore and a whole heap of red cordial.

“Upon arrival, the kids were completely chuffed at the sight of the reef. Coral and fish as far as the eye could see, the visibility the best it’s been and above all, an extremely healthy reef.

“Snorkelling around the reef definitely proved to be exquisite with the sights of hundreds of different species of coral and fish.

“From the shore, there was a whole heap of laughter and joy to be seen and heard. Kids crash tackling each other into the water, having shoulder wars and just taking in the sun.

“To round off an incredible trip, the kids got to relax and enjoy the ride home with some live music courtesy of the crew at Quicksilver. All in all, it was a trip to be remembered.”

Also Anet Ridley, Principal at Miallo State School, said it was wonderful to see students connecting with Year 6’s from other schools.

“The weather was perfect and their teacher of the Miallo State Students, Mr Barnes, was very impressed with their participation and behaviour on the day,” Ms Ridley said.

“Students were treated to a delicious smorgasbord lunch, snorkelling and live music on the deck on the way home.

“We would like to thank Quicksilver Cruises for enabling this to happen. It has become a rite of passage for our Senior students for many years and students, parents and staff are incredibly grateful for the opportunity.”
