Intriguing sub-plots and storylines ahead of Survivor golf finale
THE DECIDER
What an event director has labelled Australia’s biggest two-person amateur golf tournament that has a motto of “making amateurs feel like professionals” will reach its much-awaited conclusion this weekend in Port Douglas.
The event co-founded by Dave Cameron to shine the spotlight on mental health awareness, Survivor golf, will host its grand final on Sunday with a host of pairings vying for grand final glory at the Sheraton Mirage.
The event promises so much with many intriguing sub plots and talking points to play out over the weekend.
Locally, the Douglas community will throw its support behind two teams, “The Bushies”, which consists of Brad Case and Joseph Amerio and “Angry Birdies”, the pairing of local club champions Troy Cox and Kristie McDowall.
“Brad and Joseph are a really incredible story,” Mr Cameron told Newsport.
“They were the first team to qualify for the final and they’ve had the whole year to prepare for the final.
"They’ve been playing Mirage Country Club every night for past three weeks so they’re in form at the right time.
“Local club champions Kristie and Troy will also enjoy big support and head into the event as a pairing to really look out for.”
In other talking points, the event’s first ever female finalists’ will take their deserved spot in Sunday’s decider.
Atherton pairing Samantha Duck and Alicia English survived a playoff in front of more than 100 spectators to book their golden ticket with Cameron describing their effort “as just fantastic” and “their qualification shows the evenness and depth of the competition”.
Another fun aspect of the weekend will see three father son combinations take their place on the tee.
Innisfail’s “Cobra Boys”, Mareeba’s “Ball Hunters” and Yeppoon’s “Bear Boys” make up the family duos that will compete in the finals.
In a boost for Survivor Golf the event will expand into Bali and New Zealand next year with international players to qualify to play the decider in Port Douglas.
In other developments an inaugural Trans-Tasman long drive competition featuring the Aussie Long Ballers and New Zealand Long Blacks will take place tomorrow evening at the Sheraton Mirage course.
More broadly, this year’s event stands to be one of the best yet.
“Our focus is to make amateur golfers feel like professionals,” Mr Cameron reiterated.
“Where the tournament has gone and where it is now, we’re really proud to host this final in Port Douglas.
“From the mental health point of view Survivor golf as a whole continues to be a vehicle to promote mental health awareness.
“We’re proud of our ongoing relationship with the Kick On charity.
“In recent times we’ve seen multiple players from our events that have reached out to Kick On, for themselves, their brother, their sister – if we can help one person’s life by staging these events then that’s a huge win for us.”
The winner of Sunday’s event earns a ticket for themselves and nine other people aboard the luxurious Liquid Desire boat and a cruise on local waters.
