Port Douglas’ own ‘Community Club’, also known as the Tin Shed, has launched their Tin Shed Grant to help build a better community.

Supporting the community has always been a great focus of the Tin Shed. The recently launched ‘Tin Shed Grant’ is one of the many initiatives the club has had over the years.

Kyle Livingston, general manager at the Tin Shed, said that the purpose of the Grant is to build a better community where local not-for-profit groups or organisations, who provide services to local residents, can apply for funding.

Having a strong affinity with the community of Port Douglas and the surrounding areas, the Tin Shed is well known for supporting all branches of local groups.

“This is something we have done previously but not on this scale”, Mr Livingston said. “We have reviewed and restructured it, making it a bigger initiative.

“The aim of the Community Grant Program is to support a range of initiatives that address identified needs that will enhance the well-being of our community.

“We are continuously looking at what more we can do to help the community. Knowing there is a huge demand on funding to help the local clubs, organisations and not-for-profit businesses’ it seemed fit.

“We offer up to $4,000 in grants to local not-for-profit groups or organisations, who provide services to local residents.

“The community is extremely important to the Club. This is our way of showing our appreciation and giving back.”

Successful applicants

So far, Mr Livingston said they have had nothing but positive feedback from organisations who have received the grant. He added that they will run the Grant on a monthly basis for as long as possible.

The following community groups have already received funding from the Tin Shed Grant:

1. Meals on Wheels – their funding is to upgrade their desktop computer.
2. QCWA Port Douglas – their funding is to repair and replace the screens of the window at their branch hall.
3. Douglas Community Support Services - Mossman Branch – their funding is going to upgrade their children’s play area.
4. Wonga Beach State School P&C Association – their funding is to install an additional water bubbler at Wonga Beach State School.
5. Douglas Hockey Association – their funding is to purchase new kits for their hockey programs.
6. Port Douglas Community Service Network – their funding is to install a washer, dryer and shelving at the neighbourhood centre to allow the homeless to wash their clothes and freshen up as well.
